"Gandhi Tents1 on the Green" just outside Curves in Roosevelt Center.

Friday May 9
8:00pm Earthlings This multi-award winning documentary film narrated by Hollywood actor Joaquin Phoenix, is a documentary about mankind's dependence on animals for food, clothing, entertainment and use in experimentation.
Saturday May 10
7:30pm A Convenient Truth: Urban Solutions from Curitiba, Brazil This new film is an informative, inspirational documentary aimed at sharing ideas to provoke environment-friendly and cost-effective changes in cities worldwide. The documentary focuses on innovations in transportation, recycling, social benefits including affordable housing, seasonal parks, and the processes that transformed Curitiba into one of the most livable cities in the world.
Sunday May 11
4:00pm The Story of Stuff This 20-minute animation is a fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. This film exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world.

Saturday May 10
11:00am Urban Composting A presentation by Maryland Master Gardeners on how you can reduce land fill pollution and build up your soil at the same time
2:00pm A New Greenbelt Renaissance A visioning sharing workshop on ideas for building a sustainable skilled, artistic, and green local economy in Greenbelt
3:00pm New Ideas in Reducing Pollution in our Waterways A local BARC scientist will talk about cutting edge research on the use of an algae-based water treatment system to reduce nutrient pollution into the Chesapeake Bay.
4:00pm The Urban Food and Organic Land Care Movement in Greenbelt Using Permaculture Principles this workshop will focus on ideas for how you can transform your large or small yard or use containers to create a pesticide free, edible, and wildlife and Chesapeake Bay friendly space. This session will also discuss ideas for a demonstration community garden outside the community center and review the Greenbelt Recycling and Environment Advisory Committee (REAC) report on Pesticide Use in Greenbelt that recommended Greenbelt adopt a goal of meeting standards for organic land care management by January 2010.
5:30pm The Problem with Overpopulation Pam Wasserman, Vice President for Education of Population Connection (formerly Zero Population Growth) will give a history and overview of Population Connection and discuss its three major areas of work: population education, advocacy, and grassroots field work. The discussion will highlight the environmental effects of overpopulation and inform interested individuals how to become aware of and involved in population issues.
Sunday May 11
12:30pm Compassionate and Earth Friendly Eating for a Planet in Crisis This practical session will focus on fostering healthy eating habits for the planet and ourselves that Compassion Over Killing (COK) has developed that reflect the rights of all beings.
2:00pm Ensuring the Right to Safe Non-Car Transportation in Greenbelt This workshop is facilitated by NASA and University of Maryland employees, this presentation will focus on issues and ideas concerning providing "safe and convenient alternatives to cars" including bike paths for Greenbelters to get to work each day.
3:00pm The Challenge of Retro-fit Greening of Our Homes and Work Place This session will focus on practical ways we can work to reduce our carbon footprint within our houses and work places.
1 Gandhi's principles of nonviolence, seeking the truth in all beings, simplicity, vegetarianism, building local economies, non-cooperation with injustice, experimenting with finding better ways to live, learning from mistakes, and building inclusive communities dedicated to respecting the rights of all beings provide a framework for the presentations and films being organized for the weekend.
